American boxing writers name Pacman as Fighter of the Year

Filipino ring sensation Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao earned yet another major award for his exceptional performance in 2006.

According to mannypacquiao.ph reports, Pacquiao has been honored as Fighter of the Year by the New York-based Boxing Writers Association of America (WBAA) which is already on its 80th year of existence.

The Philippines' boxing superstar won three times in 2006, including two sensational knockout victories against Mexican pride Erik Morales.

Pacquiao took sweet revenge of his unanimous decision defeat against Morales the first time they've met in March 2005 by scoring 10th round sensational stoppage in their rematch on January 21, 2006.

When the two famous boxers returned to the ring in November 18 for their trilogy, Pacquiao proved his knockout victory was no fluke, forcing the Mexican to quit after he has been knocked down in the third round.

In between the two fights against Morales, Pacquiao had another Mexican victim as he demolished the visiting Oscar Lario on July 2 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Pacquiao, now with ring record of 43 victories including 34 knockouts against three losses and two draws, has also been named Fighter of the Year by Ring Magazine and other boxing websites.

Pacquiao, who is planning to join the forthcoming May 14 elections, has also chosen as one of the eight local athletes named for 2006 Athlete of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA).

Meanwhile, Pacquiao's famous American trainer Freddie Roach, who was in the corner for all three fights of Pacman, was also honored as Trainer of the Year. (PNA)
