Subject: The Coup that Never Was

Dear yahoo groups,

I am entering my second week here in the philippines and so far these are my observations:

1) There was no coup. malacanang is using the present military leadership to crack down on dissenters when it preempted the groundswell celebrating edsa one from establisahing a monentum towards another people power.

2) Immediately leftwing leaders, especially party-list legisdlators are being branded "communists" and are being accused of forming a united front with "disgruntled" military officers. thus the romantic notions of the fusion of the extreme lefts and rights
are being bruited about.

3) The coup talking points are slowly being unravelled, but it reeks of a script that is being thought of on one's feet. what is clear is general esperon has successfully created his super highway to being the next chief of staff by weeding out other
candidates who are on the way.

4) It is ridiculous that the supposed putchists were convincing senga and esperon to join the marchers as they celebrated the 20th anniversary of edsa one.current chief of staff senga, who is rumored to being the latest presidential boy friend, it seems is on
esperon's loop. the logical move if there was a coup at all was to compartmentalized senga and especially esperon who is one of the major players in the 2004election fraud in mindanao, togehter with formercomelec commissioner garcillano.

5) It is ludicrous for the military brass to claim that the marines and scout rangers were asked to have a formation inside fort bonifacio before proceeding to take offensive posture. as a result, esperon claimed that it therefore became easy for the forces loyal to malacanang to isolate the coup formation. that would be the last generals lim and querubin would do, if they were plotting against the government. one does not set shop in his enemy's lairs to topple him down.

6) The police of course are feasting on "warrantless arrests". trumped up charges, however, are being trashed by fiscals and even former solicitor-general benipayo that cost the latter his job. of course the objective is never prosecution but just plain
harrassment, as in the case of randy david and pia hontiveros-baraquel who just walked out unscathed.

7) Meanwhile, the batasan 5 has become overnight heroes and GMA's popularity ratings stayed below the cellar. today, the fertile imagination of malacanang has put gringo honasan on top of the wanted list. thelatest casualty also is the GMA's credibility with the bishops who have offered to use church premises as sanctuary for anyone who will be victims of political repression.

8) The biggest casualty is press freedom. the daily tribune, abs-cbn, newsbreak magazine, the national usion of filipino journalists and the philippine center for investigative journalism has been dangled search warrants. all of a suddent the national
telecommunications commission is reiterating journalism guidelines.

9) Freedom of speech and assembly are also being repressed. first gentleman mike arroyo today filed libel charges against senator jinggoy estrada who used parliamentary privilege to link the former to smuggling in the country.

10) All told, the arroyo government's moves using uniformed men as implementors, is to sow fear among the citizens in the face of the high momentum of public acceptance of the fact that the president is engaged in a premeditated cover up at all costs
against charges of massive election fraud and organized plunder of agricultural funds.

11) As we speak, the last remaining rampart in the office of ombudsman, the honorable deputy gervacio is retiring this week. his former boss, simeon marcelo has been replaced by the the first gentleman's classmate mercedita gutierrez.

There are reports that the successor of gervacio was hand picked by Iggy Arroyo, the brother of Mike, a certain "jalandoni" obviously an illongo.

I am sure if no miracles happen soon, that the cover-up will soon be orchestrated within the ombudsman to shred evidences that have traces to the presidential bedroom.

12) From where i stand, i see the total disrespect of malacanang against the institutions of democracy in an effort to perpetuate what the majority of the nation
considers in surveys as an illegitimate presidency.

As far as i am concerned, i wish to repeat my theory that only a special elections, following guidelines in our constitution, can render the present political crisis the much needed closure we all deserve.

La gloria can use that democratic exercise to either seek a new and fresh mandate or just render the selection for her successor.

I do not see how she, lame as she has become, can force a whole nation to be any acquiscent. the protest is in the people's hearts, soon they will be voting with their feet as events come to a head.

When she called for emergency powers, she took the sword out of its sheath, and now , a la damocles, the same hangs over her head. she has riden the back of the tiger. unfortunately most of those who did in history, ended up inside the belly of the predator.

We who have stitled and scaffolded the economy of our motherland, must do whatever we can to save our democracy, moreso now that the people who have been entrusted governance are the ones who are destroying it. #
