PerryScope - OFWs on the Road to Empowerment

Perry Diaz

OFWs on the Road to Empowerment

The recent furor over Malu Fernandez's controversial "From Boracay to Greece" commentary has brought to the forefront of debate the issue of political power -- or lack of power -- of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). Little did Fernandez, a Manila Standard society columnist, realize that the article she wrote for her targeted audience -- Manila's elite -- would incite a riot in cyberspace. A torrent of emails flooded the Internet blogs. Her arrogant response which was printed in her column further infuriated the OFWs and the protests snowballed into an avalanche that knocked her out cold. Stunned, she quit her job. Call it "mob" justice or any other term. She deserved it.

When starting any enterprise or business, whether it is full-time or part-time, we all know the value of having plenty of capital (money). But I bet we both know or at least have heard of people who started with no capital who went on to make fortunes. How? You may ask.

Travel agent, job placement agent or any other kinds of agent relating to travel or working overseas has diffrent roles and characteristics.

There’s a fake agent, there’s an authorized agent but still performs irregularities, there’s unauthorized agent but don’t do irregularities and there’s an authorized agent who is really true to their service.

DAVAO: TAYO NA SA DAVAO... KADAYAWAN NA!

TAYO NA SA DAVAO... KADAYAWAN NA!

A warm and friendly greeting derived from the Dabawenyo word "dayaw" that means good, valuable, superior or beautiful. Such is "Kadayawan," a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living.

Today, Kadayawan has metamorphosed into a festival of festivals, the mother of many other fesivals in the region as it honors Davao's heritage, its past personified by the ancestral "lumads", its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as they parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings bestowed on the city.

Promoting productivity to benefit all - Asian Employment Forum

ILO Online - No. 32 - Thursday 9 August 2007

Asian Employment Forum

Promoting productivity to benefit all

Increasing labour productivity is crucial for a country’s economic growth and overall competitiveness. It is also a vital tool for creating quality jobs and reducing poverty, since productivity gains can lead to higher wages, better working conditions and investment in human resources. These are the messages of a new ILO report 1/ prepared for the Asian Employment Forum in Beijing (13 to 15 August). ILO Online spoke with Ms. Sachiko Yamamoto, ILO Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, about the link between productivity growth, employment creation and decent working conditions.

Tips: 'Application Received' Will No Longer be Stamped in Passports Upon Visa Refusal

'Application Received' Will No Longer be Stamped in Passports Upon Visa Refusal

By Michael J. Gurfinkel Esq.

For over 25 years, consular officers have been noting visa refusals (denials) by stamping “Application Received” at the back page of an applicant's passport. This was how a consul would alert other consuls to the fact that a person had a previous visa denial or refusal.

Many people, aware of this “kiss of death”, would try various types of tricks and schemes to hide a previous refusal, such as claiming to have “lost” their passport and applying for a new one, which did not have the “Application Received” on the back page. I know one case where an enterprising applicant tried to glue the last page to the back of the passport, so that when the consul tried to open the back of the passport, the second to last page would appear blank. Of course, the consul knew exactly how many pages are in a Philippine passport, and since the “last” page of the passport did not jive with the actual number of pages, the applicant was again refused a visa.

Marketing Plan

Every business -- big, medium, small, or micro -- needs a plan. If you do not have a marketing plan, you may be running in circles and losing a lot in your business.

A marketing plan is your plan of action -- what you will sell, to whom you will sell it and how often, at what price, and how you will get the product to the buyer. It is strategic. It includes numbers, facts and
objectives; however, it is not primarily numerical.
